EDITOR’S NOTE: This post has been updated to reflect the City’s new 2023 CCEC application deadline. The new deadline to submit your intent to run for this year’s CCEC elections is now Thursday, February 23, 2023.
January sure didn’t stick around for long.
Now that we’ve made it to February, we’ve officially reached the start of the second half of the 2022–23 school year. And with everything scheduled to take place over the next several months—spring PSAL sports, enrollment application deadlines, spring recess, College Decision Day, and the start of graduation/stepping up season, among others—it’s time to begin planning ahead and considering your children’s next steps!
This month, Midwinter Recess (February 20–24) is the most notable event on our schools calendar, as all NYC public schools will be closed during this time. Also this month, City schools are celebrating Black History Month, as well as Respect for All Week (February 13–17)—check out our official Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram feeds throughout the month to see how City schools and students are commemorating these annual events!
Beyond that, it’s important to note that this is the last full month before March’s application deadline for City 3-K and Pre-K programs—if you are planning to apply on your child’s behalf for placement in the City’s 3-K and Pre-K programs next fall, we encourage you to use February to research and select your preferred schools and then submit your application before the deadline on March 10, 2023.
And now, without further ado, let’s take a look at what’s happening in NYC public schools throughout the rest of February 2023, courtesy of our official 2022–23 NYC Public Schools Calendar.

Black History Month

2023 Community and Citywide Education Council Elections
From now until Thursday, February 23, 2023, parents of current NYC public school students can submit applications to run for Education Council seats across the five boroughs.
Community and Citywide Education Councils (CCECs) are part of New York City’s school governance structure. There are Community Education Councils (CECs) for each of the City’s 32 school districts, as well as four Citywide Councils (High Schools, Special Education, English Language Learners, and District 75). Collectively, the City’s CCEC’s are charged with promoting student achievement, advising and commenting on educational policies, and providing input to the Chancellor and the Panel for Educational Policy.
To learn more about the City’s Education Councils and this year’s election process, visit our Elections 2023 Community and Citywide Educational Councils webpage and submit your intent to run via your New York City Schools Account (NYCSA) by February 23, 2023.
Respect for All Week
From February 13–17, City public schools are celebrating Respect for All (RFA) Week, the DOE’s annual weeklong call to action for City schools, to build, promote, and maintain safe and inclusionary school communities and environments on behalf of our students, staff, and community members.
Learn more about RFA Week by checking out our official RFA page.
2023 Big Apple Awards
Know a great educator? City students, families, community members, and other school staff members can recognize outstanding City educators by nominating them for the 2023 Big Apple Awards!
But don’t delay—the 2023 Big Apple Award nomination period ends on Tuesday, February 28, 2023!
3-K and Pre-K Admissions
Families with children born in 2019 and 2020 can apply for New York City’s Pre-K and 3-K programs, respectively. Learn more about Pre-K admissions on our official Pre-K webpage, and check out our official 3-K admissions webpage to learn more about this year’s 3-K application. Also, check out our Elementary Admissions Events page for information about virtual information sessions that we will be hosting this month via Zoom to discuss 3-K, pre-k, kindergarten, and Gifted and Talented admissions.
