NYC families: it’s time give your kids a summer to remember.
Summer Rising, the New York City’s free summer learning program for students in grades K–8, is now open for registration!
Available citywide, Summer Rising provides City students with full day, in-person learning experiences that mix academics, the arts, and outdoor activities all season long! Organized and run by New York City Public Schools principals in collaboration with trusted community-based organizations (CBOs), Summer Rising provides students with a mix of academic and social emotional learning alongside fun activities, like arts, sports, and even field trips to local parks, zoos, museums, and more. All Summer Rising programs will be held in safe and supportive environments with staff members who are prepared to respond to children’s social and emotional needs. In addition, breakfast, lunch, and snack will be served to each student, and transportation arrangements (i.e. busing or MetroCards) will be made for eligible students.
Generally, Summer Rising programs will run for six weeks from July 5–August 11, 2023, from 8:00 a.m.—6:00 p.m.—students in grades K–5 will then have an additional seventh week (ending August 18) of enrichment activities and trips. K–8 students with 12-month Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), including Extended School Year students and those who are currently in ASD Nest and Horizon programs, have variations on this scheduling—please check out our Summer Rising webpage for specific calendar and scheduling details.

Summer Rising is a partnership between the NYC Department of Education (DOE) and the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD). Families can use this map to identify K–8 Summer Rising sites.
Enrolling in Summer Rising 2023
From now until May 1, 2023, the Summer Rising 2023 application portal is live for families seeking placement into any of the City’s Summer Rising programs this year. Any K–8 student attending school in New York City during the 2022–2023 school year, including charter, nonpublic, and homeschool students, are eligible to apply for Summer Rising 2023 programs.
In response to the feedback we’ve received from City families, community-based organizations, and school staff members, we have revised our enrollment practices this year to make Summer Rising more equitable, inclusive, and family-friendly. We know there is a high demand for summer programming, and we are eager to provide Summer Rising to as many families as possible.
This year:
-
- We’re prioritizing Summer Rising seats for students mandated for summer school for academic reasons, Students in Temporary Housing, students in foster care settings, students with 12-month IEP programs, and students with local school-year connections to CBO programs and schools providing Summer Rising programming this year.
-
- Applications will no longer be first-come, first-served—all families will be considered, regardless of when they applied during this year’s Summer Rising enrollment period (April 17—May 1, 2023).
-
- Families will be able to apply for Summer Rising through an application portal, which allows families to apply for Summer Rising programming from a cell phone or any other internet-connected device in a matter of minutes.
-
- Families will be allowed to rank multiple options in the application portal, which means that they will be more likely to receive a seat in summer programming.
-
- Applicants will be able to update/change their enrollment preferences and/or withdraw their application during their enrollment window.
Complete the Summer Rising 2023 Application by May 1
Check out our official map to identify Summer Rising sites of interest, and visit our official Summer Rising 2023 application portal to view and complete this year’s Summer Rising application. The application window will close on Monday, May 1, 2023.
Families should have their child’s nine-digit student ID/OSIS number on hand when completing the Summer Rising application—this ID number can be found on their children’s report cards, NYC Schools Account (NYCSA), and on most official documents from their schools. All NYC students, including charter school and nonpublic school students, have an ID number.
Once they are logged into the online application, families should rank as many program options as possible to increase the likelihood of their child being placed in a program of their choice. Families who submit an application before the May 1 deadline will still be able to make updates and even withdraw their application outright. Just note that these changes can only be done before the application period closes on May 1—when a change is submitted, the most recent version of your application will entirely overwrite any prior versions.
Need help completing or viewing your Summer Rising application? Parent coordinators are available throughout the application window to support families with their applications, including families who may not have access to the internet. You may also reach out to your child’s school, Summer Rising CBOs, or our official Summer email inbox (summer@schools.nyc.gov) with any questions.
Confirm Your Child’s Placement in Mid-May
Approximately a week after the application window closes, participating families will receive an email confirming their children’s placements into Summer Rising programs, pending seat availability. Once those emails have been received, the only other action families will need to take before the start of summer is to complete the DYCD Supplemental Forms that will be provided by their child’s Summer Rising program.
Please note that we will not be maintaining centrally-managed waitlists for Summer Rising programs. That being said, families may still reach out directly to their CBO programs of choice and ask to be notified in case new Summer Rising seats become available.
Students who enroll in Summer Rising by May 1 and are later mandated for summer school in late May or early June 2023 will need to attend Summer Rising at their home school’s designated summer site—we will notify you if your child’s Summer Rising placement has been changed as a result of a summer school mandate.
