Time is almost up!
Friday, January 20, 2023, is the last day for families with children born in 2018 to submit their applications for fall 2023 admission into the City’s public elementary schools (Grades K–5).
All current NYC residents whose children will turn five this calendar year are guaranteed a kindergarten seat at an NYC public school this fall, including:
- Pre-K students currently attending DOE district schools, Pre-K Centers, NYC Early Education Centers, charter schools, private schools, or parochial programs;
- Children who are attending school for the first time;
- Students with disabilities and/or accessibility needs;
- Multilingual learners;
- Students from temporary housing; and
- LGBTQ and gender nonconforming students.
Families can use MySchools to explore their elementary school options, save their favorites, and submit their applications. And don’t worry if you do not have a MySchools account—it’s easy to create one and get started! In addition, families may also submit their kindergarten applications by phone at (718) 935-2009, where interpretation services are available in over 200 languages, as well as in person at a Family Welcome Center.
Please note that even if your child is currently in one of the City’s Pre-K programs, you will still need to submit a kindergarten application on their behalf by the January 20 deadline.
New This Year: Apply for Gifted & Talented Programs on the Same Kindergarten Application
For the first time ever, families interested in applying for any Gifted & Talented programs in their districts or across the City can apply using the same general kindergarten application. Simply list your G&T choices on your kindergarten application, and eligibility will be determined once your application has been submitted.
Students will be considered for eligibility based on behaviors that may indicate readiness for accelerated learning. To learn more about G&T admissions, including the eligibility process, please visit our Gifted & Talented webpage.
