It sure seems like the summer weather really didn’t want to overstay its welcome in NYC this year…
October is here, and with the arrival of the second month of the 2022–23 school year comes cooler temperatures, playoff baseball, pumpkin-flavored everything, Halloween costume stores that seemingly appear out of nowhere, and never-ending photostreams of your family and friends’ latest pumpkin patch adventures.
For City public school families, October gives students and educators time to build upon the first impressions and lessons learned throughout the first weeks of the school year. Save for a few key dates, including this month’s observances of Yom Kippur (October 5) and Italian Heritage/Indigenous Peoples’ Day (October 10), we can look forward to our students spending more time in the classroom this month—it won’t be long before the great morning routines and class procedures your kids learned in September start to stick!

Some notes about this month’s schedule:
SHSAT Application Opens October 6
Interested in applying for fall 2023 admission for New York City’s Specialized High Schools? Current eighth and ninth grade students who live in the City can register to take the City’s Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) for potential entry into eight of the City’s nine Specialized High Schools beginning on October 6. To register for the SHSAT, interested students should register through their MySchools account, school counselor, or a Family Welcome Center.
Once registered, students will take the SHSAT on November 17, 19, or 20—check out our official Specialized High Schools webpage to learn more.
NYC High School Application Opens October 12
Seeking admission into a NYC public high school in fall 2023? Beginning October 12, current eighth grade students or current ninth grade students who are not repeating their first year of high school can fill out and complete their official 2022–23 NYC high school application.
This month, current eighth grade students in City public schools will receive high school welcome letters from their school. Each letter contains a unique access code that they (or their parents/guardians) can use to create a MySchools account. Once created, the MySchools account can then be used to access, complete, and submit this year’s application.
In addition to MySchools, students (or their parents/guardians) can also submit their high school applications through their school counselor or a Family Welcome Center.
Learn more on our official High School webpage.
Middle School Application Opens October 26
Have a fifth-grader who’s on track to attend middle school in fall 2023? Beginning October 26, parents of current fifth grade students or current sixth grade students whose elementary schools end in sixth grade can fill out and complete their children’s official 2022–23 NYC middle school applications on MySchools or through a Family Welcome Center.
