Get ready: the NYC high school application is about to open.
During the week of January 24, 2022, the NYC high school application will open to families. Available to students who are entering high school in fall 2022 as well as students who are not repeating grade 9, the high school application provides students with their best chance at getting into their choice of the City’s 400+ public high school options.
To apply for City high schools, an applicant must be both a City resident AND a current eighth grade or first-time ninth grade student. NYC public high schools welcome and serve all of the following:
- Current NYC public school students (district and charter schools);
- Private or parochial school students;
- Students with disabilities (in accordance with their Individualized Education Program (IEP));
- Students with accessibility needs;
Prepare for High School Admissions
As we wait for the start of the 2022 high school application period in January, we’ve made it easy for families to begin preparing today:
Review Your Welcome Letter and Access Your MySchools Account
Back in October 2021, we sent personalized welcome letters to families of eighth grade students who are enrolled in NYC public schools. This letter includes information regarding how to access your child’s MySchools account, which you will use to explore your high school options and to apply for high school once the application opens in January 2022.
If needed, any NYC eighth grade or first-time ninth grade student can get a copy of their welcome letter from their current school or a Family Welcome Center. If you are a private or parochial school family, you can request your welcome letter from a Family Welcome Center.
Use MySchools to Explore Your High School Options
MySchools provides families with an outstanding way to discover and learn more about each of the City’s high schools. Simply log into your MySchools account, and begin your search. You can also save programs of interest to your MySchools “Favorites” list by simply clicking the star icon next to each school’s name. We recommend that you save about 25 programs—once the application opens, you can then narrow your options down to your top 12 choices.
Gather Additional Information about Your Favorite Schools
As you search your child’s high school options on MySchools, you’ll notice that each school’s MySchools page also includes a direct link to their main website—check out each of your favorite program’s main websites to learn even more information about that school. Some school websites even offer additional information regarding in-person and virtual open houses for prospective families. In addition, school websites provide contact information that families can use for specific questions or concerns—please use this information as needed to learn more about your potential school options.
In addition, we recommend you check out our November Virtual Information Session to get a walkthrough of how to create a MySchools account and use MySchools to explore school options. Then check out Part 2 of our Virtual Information Session when it takes place in January 2022—dates, times, and language access information for this session will be announced in the coming weeks on our High School page.
Finally, we suggest you (or your student) book an appointment with your school counselor to discuss your high school options—your counselor will be your guide throughout the admissions process!
Updates to Keep in Mind for 2022 High School Admissions
- In response to feedback from community leaders, families, and schools, borough and zone-based admissions priorities will remain in place this year. This means that some high school programs will continue to prioritize zoned applicants and/or applicants who live or currently attend middle school in a specific borough. District-based admissions priorities were eliminated last year and will continue to not be used in high school admissions.
- For high school programs that screen applicants, multiple measures will be used to evaluate students this year. These measures will include submissions of work samples from last year, such as essays or reports, and first-semester grades from this school year.
- The deadline to submit your high school application will be March 1, 2022.
