(Ed. Note: This post has been updated with a new deadline for the 2020 Cover Design Challenge: Friday, December 20, 2019.)

The DOE’s annual Cover Design Challenge is back!

Cover design challenge finalists from last year

From now until December 20, 2019, New York City’s high school students can help design the cover of the DOE’s upcoming 2020 NYC High School Admissions Guide.

Printed annually, NYC High School Admissions Guides are distributed to thousands of middle school students every year, and for the past decade, each Guide has featured covers created by our Cover Design Challenge winners. Last year, over 250 students submitted entries for the competition, and a few lucky finalists were selected to participate in graphic design workshops and work with design professionals. Final revised covers were voted on by DOE staff members and the public, and the winning design appears on the cover of our current 2020 NYC High School Admissions Guide. Other winning designs are featured on our printed admissions guides for kindergarten, middle school, and gifted and talented programs, as well as our online guides on MySchools.

The 2020 Cover Design Challenge is possible thanks to the DOE’s ongoing partnership with Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

For information on how to submit a design, including recommended templates and judging criteria, please visit our Cover Design Challenge webpage. For inspiration, take a look at some winning designs from previous years’ challenges.

Remember: submissions are due Friday, December 20, 2019—good luck to everyone entering the challenge!
