What a great day to start first grade! (Photo Credit: @morahjen via Twitter)

There’s nothing quite like the first day of school.

It’s a day when everything feels brand new, yet familiar—a day when everything feels possible…

…And it’s also a day that flies by in the blink of an eye!

See how New Yorkers of all ages celebrated the City’s first day of school by checking out our selection of photos below.

We thank everyone who shared their photos and videos on social media with the hashtag, #BacktoSchoolNYC! We also thank all of the teachers, administrators, school staff members, bus drivers, custodial staff members, community partners, safety officers, and parents who helped make this year’s first day of school a success!

  1. First day back and adjusting to the new DOE structure. The average parent who is not involved in the school system would have a hard time finding what they need to learn about individual school status and District activities.

It wasn’t a success for the students that were abandoned by their buses and left standing on the sidewalk for hours. Many students were left in tears on their first day of school! I wouldn’t by any means call that a success instead I would say that is the very definition of failure.
