To help you and your loved ones have a smooth start to the school year, we put together the following list of tips that students and families can use between now and the first day of school on Wednesday, September 5, 2018.

- Start establishing your family’s morning routine before the first day of school.
To help make it easier for your family to get adjusted to the start of a brand new school year, start practicing your family’s morning routine at least a few days before the first day of school. Set your morning alarms, wake up on time, get ready for work/school, and get to your car/subway station/bus stop on time as you and your family would throughout the school year.
- New to a school? Practice your morning commute before the first day of school.
Don’t risk arriving late on your first day at your new school! Get used to your new morning commute by taking a few trips to your new school before the start of the school year.
- Set a standard bedtime routine and schedule at least two weeks before the first day of school.
Bedtime routines are very important for children. Schedule a regular bedtime, and start sticking to it before the end of August. The earlier you can get your family back into a normalized bedtime routine for the school year, the easier September will be for everyone in your household.
- Don’t skip breakfast!
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, especially when it comes to children. Kids who skip breakfast are more likely to be restless, tired, and inattentive in the classroom. Incorporate breakfast into your morning routine at home, or utilize our schools’ Breakfast Menus or Breakfast in the Classroom programs.
- Get children to read at least one book during the last two weeks of summer vacation.
One of the best things a child can do to help prepare themselves for the upcoming school year is to read a book. Reading helps prime our brains for learning and language retention, so children who read at least one book in the last week or two before the first day of school are better prepared to learn.

- Set house rules for the school year for electronic devices (i.e. no TV/smartphone use during homework time, no videogames on school nights, etc).
Electronic devices, such as tablets, smartphones, and videogame consoles, can be incredibly distracting to students of all ages. Set house rules and expectations for the use of these devices before the school year begins in order to make it clear to children that school comes first. (Sorry, Fortnite)
- Save time every morning by getting clothes/backpacks ready the night before a school day.
Makes sense, right? Anything you can do to reduce the amount of time it takes for you and your family to get going every morning goes a long way.
- Choose backpacks with wide and padded shoulder straps.
Heavy backpacks can cause students to endure neck, back, and shoulder pain. Help minimize or eliminate this pain entirely by purchasing backpacks with thick shoulder straps. Also, consider purchasing backpacks with waist straps, as these straps can help improve weight distribution.
