Financial Aid Awareness Month LogoDid you know that November is Financial Aid Awareness Month?

It’s no secret that college can get pretty expensive. Fortunately, financial aid is available to help students and families pay for college.

All month long, high schools across the City will be offering extra resources and attention to graduating seniors as they work to fill out and submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Colleges use the FAFSA to determine if students are eligible for federal student aid, which can include grants, student loans, and work-study. In some cases, students can attend college for free.

Filling out and completing the FAFSA is a crucial step towards college attendance, as students who complete the FAFSA are much more likely to enroll in college. Additionally, in order to be eligible for any type of college aid, students must complete and submit their FAFSAs accordingly.

Unfortunately, many students do not complete a FAFSA because they incorrectly believe they are not eligible for financial aid. As a result, it has been estimated that nearly $50 million in Pell grant awards alone goes untapped by otherwise qualified City seniors each year.

FIFTY. MILLION. If only they had filled out their FAFSAs!

So, if you are you are a high school senior (or the parent of a graduating senior), be sure to fill out a FAFSA as soon as you are able. Not only would you be helping to make college more attainable for yourself and your family, but you would also be improving your chances of obtaining financial aid; many colleges (such as CUNY) allocate funds on a rolling, first-come-first-served basis, so SUBMIT YOUR FAFSA EARLY!

To learn more about the FAFSA completion process and other types of financial aid available to students, check out the video posted above, and visit our financial aid information page.

We wish all of our graduating high school seniors success throughout this year’s college application process!
