Back in fall 2014, New York City set the national standard for early childhood education by introducing free, full-day pre-kindergarten for every four-year old in the City through its Pre-K for All program. Thanks to Pre-K for All, over 100,000 of the City’s elementary school students are better prepared for success in school now and in the future.
Now that we have tripled the number of the City’ four-year olds getting a head start on their education through Pre-K for All, we are excited to announce a new path to academic success for the City’s three-year olds.
Introducing 3-K for All; the City’s new free, full-day, high-quality early childhood education program for the City’s three-year olds.
Beginning in fall 2017, three-year olds who reside in School Districts 7 and 23 (South Bronx and Brownsville, respectively) can be considered for seats in nearby free, full-day, high-quality 3-K programs. By fall 2018, the DOE expects to have seats available for every three-year old who wants one in Districts 7 & 23, and by fall 2020, at least six additional school districts will have 3-K program options.
Ultimately, the DOE plans to provide universal access to 3-K for all City three-year olds by fall 2021.
So why is 3-K for All important?
- 3-K Students are better prepared for kindergarten
- 3-Kers have stronger academic and social skills
- Families of 3-K students are more likely to spend time reading together
