Over the past 10 years, the covers of these directories have been designed by the winners of our annual Cover Design Competition. Thanks to a partnership with Cooper Hewitt, the DOE has been able to host this competition and challenge the City’s aspiring graphic designers to create cover designs that reflect and capture their experiences as City public school students. This year, over 250 students submitted entries for the competition, and 14 finalists were selected for the opportunity to participate in graphic design workshops and work with design professionals, including award-winning comic book artist and illustrator, Phil Jimenez.
After much deliberation, including a public vote that took place in mid-February, the winning design of this year’s Cover Design Competition is:
Congratulations to Kiara Rosa from the Manhattan Early College School for Advertising (MECA); her design will be on the cover of the DOE’s 2018 High School Directory, which will be released later this year.
Three runner-ups were also named following the end of this year’s competition. The following cover designs may be featured on other DOE publications that will be released later this year:
