Throughout the week of December 5-11, NYC public schools across all five boroughs are participating in Computer Science Education Week, an international celebration of computer science (CS) instruction and programming in elementary, middle, and high schools. Supported by more than 100,000 educators and 350 partners across the country and around the world, Computer Science Education Week encourages schools to engage students in CS education by organizing and staging activities for students that teach CS-related principles, techniques, and skills, including “hackathons” and “Hours of Code

With over 339 schools throughout the City currently participating in Computer Science Education Week this year, this school year is this the first time ever that we are celebrating this week citywide. Participating schools, which include elementary, middle, and high school programs, are offering their students a range of activities related to computer science. Some of the schools participating in this week’s festivities have already established formal computer science programming in their schools, while others are using this week to introduce CS concepts to their students for the first time ever.

The DOE’s participation in Computer Science Education Week is part of the City’s previously announced Computer Science for All initiative, a core part of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s broader Equity and Excellence for All agenda. Through Computer Science for All, every City student will receive computer science education in elementary, middle, and high school by 2025.

“Computer Science Education Week is a wonderful opportunity for our students to get involved in computer science education, whether it’s writing their first line of code, or working together to create new designs in a hackathon, said Chancellor Carmen Fariña. “It represents the work we’re doing across the City through Computer Science for All – expanding access to these important skills to all students, not just those from particular backgrounds or zip codes.”
